During my travelling career over the past 35 years as a tour guide and travel designer, I have been collecting memories. I have stayed in wonderful hotels, crossed remote borders, marvelled at breathtaking scenery, made many friends, and explored many cultures. Now I want to share my favourite travel experiences with you on a Ross Goddard Signature Journey.
In Thailand we have chartered the fabulous RV River Kwai, just ten cabins, finely crafted in teak wood, and reminiscent of the colonial boats that were once common on the inland rivers of Southeast Asia. For three days, from our base on the River Kwai, we will visit vestiges of the Thai-Burma railway, including Hellfire Pass.
In Vietnam we arrive in the central city of Danang for a two night stay at the spectacular InterContinental Sun Peninsula Resort, designed by renowned landscape architect Bill Bensley. The hotel sits on the Son Tra peninsular with stunning vistas to the South China Sea.
The Vietage train takes us in luxury from Danang to the seaside town of Quy Nhon. Superbly appointed, elegant in every way, the Vietage train is a great way to enjoy the Vietnamese countryside. Our private villas at the Anantara Quy Nhon Villas are waiting by the sea, tranquil and peaceful.
It would not be a Ross Goddard Signature Journey without an overland drive, this time from Quy Nhon on the coast, to Buon Ma Thuot in the central highlands. Here we lodge at the Lak Tented camp, an environmentally sustainable tourism venture working with the local indigenous community.
Our journey in the central highlands of Vietnam continues with a picturesque drive to the delightful city of Dalat. The French occupied Vietnam from 1883 and were looking for locations in the mountains for rest and recreation - the cool weather and clean air of Dalat were a welcome change from the humidity and heat of Saigon. The city flourished until the French departed in 1954 and thereafter became a remote and difficult place to visit during the years of the American war. In more recent times Dalat has become a favorite for Vietnamese travelers, especially honeymooners who call Dalat the 'city of love'.
Our Signature Journey concludes with a flight from Dalat to Tan Son Nhut International airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
